Located in Plumas County, California, approximately 40 air miles northwest of Reno, Nevada, Meadow View Peak is the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation’s newest property and the future home of a public recreational backcountry airstrip.

JRBAF acquired the 136-acre property in September 2026 with a vision of creating a new destination where pilots and visitors can land, camp, explore, and experience the Sierra high country.

Surrounded by Plumas National Forest, the property is a mix of open mountain meadows and mature ponderosa pine forest. The surrounding region is known for its expansive forests, mountain meadows, wetlands, and diverse high-country landscape. Visit Plumas County California

Building a New Public Backcountry Airstrip

With the property now secured, JRBAF is beginning the work required to transform Meadow View Peak into a public recreational aviation destination.

Plans call for the development of a backcountry airstrip along with day-use facilities, aircraft camping, and other amenities designed to make the property a welcoming base for exploring the surrounding landscape.

JRBAF will work with Plumas County on the approvals required for the airstrip and visitor facilities. Planning, surveying, and site improvements will take place as the project moves forward, with the goal of opening Meadow View Peak to the public by summer 2027.

In the Heart of Backcountry Flying Country

Meadow View Peak sits within an active backcountry aviation region and is only about 15 miles west of Dead Cow Lake, home of the High Sierra Fly-In.

Its location offers a distinctly different setting from JRBAF’s existing properties at the 45 Ranch and Star Valley Ranch. Here, open mountain meadows transition into stands of mature ponderosa pine, surrounded almost entirely by public forest land.

The property represents another opportunity for JRBAF to preserve access to remarkable landscapes while creating a lasting destination for recreational aviation.

A Place to Land, Camp and Explore

The long-term vision for Meadow View Peak extends beyond the runway.

JRBAF plans to develop the property as a place where pilots can spend time rather than simply land and depart. Proposed improvements include camping and day-use areas, a spring-fed water system, off-grid power and communications, fencing, mowing equipment, and other infrastructure necessary to operate and maintain the property.

The result will be a new gathering place for the backcountry aviation community and a gateway to exploring this part of the Sierra high country.

Help Build Meadow View Peak

JRBAF has launched a $200,000 Phase 1 capital campaign to complete the acquisition and begin preparing the property for public aviation access.

Half of the campaign goal will retire the remaining $100,000 seller-financed property note. The remaining funds will support:

• Site surveying and planning
• Airstrip and property improvements
• Fencing
• Mowing and maintenance equipment
• Aircraft camping and day-use facilities
• A spring-fed water system
• Off-grid power and communications

Acquiring the land was the first major step. Developing Meadow View Peak into a lasting public backcountry aviation destination will require the support of pilots, aviation businesses, and others who believe in preserving access to remote places.
