2024 Fundraising Raffle

The Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation's 2024 fundraising raffle is a chance to win some great prizes, but even more importantly, each ticket you purchase in this raffle directly contributes to our efforts to expand public backcountry aviation access for current and future generations of aviators.

We do this primarily by acquiring private property in remote areas, developing the necessary aviation infrastructure, and then opening those properties to the public for recreation and enjoyment. It is also our mission to educate the general public on the importance of backcountry aviation, while at the same time, we teach pilots the best practices for flying in the backcountry. We work to document and preserve the history of properties that we acquire and we help other backcountry stakeholders use aviation to accomplish their missions in remote areas too. We invite you to visit our website at jrbaf.org to learn more.

This year's inaugural raffle includes a famous historic backcountry aircraft, Carbon Cub Serial Number 1. Conceived of by backcountry aviation pioneer Jim Richmond, its revolutionary design set world records for STOL performance and inspired an entirely new generation of more capable and safer backcountry aircraft. It is still a great flying aircraft, and it is the very aircraft that inspired much of what we know of today as modern backcountry recreational aviation.

Other great prizes include a week for you and your friends at the historic 45 Ranch in Idaho, a ride in a P-51 Mustang WWII fighter, a pair of tickets on Alaska Airlines, a set of Alaska Bushwheels, a set of ACME black ops aircraft suspension, a tailwheel endorsement from Tac Aero, and new Bose A-30 headsets.

Please read our official rules below, and thank you for your support. Every contribution, big or small, makes a significant difference!

Anyone attempting to buy a ticket after all 25,000 tickets have been distributed will have their purchase fully refunded. 5. The grand prize is an Experimental Amateur Built (EAB) Carbon Cub, Serial Number 001 (N9696C). This historic aircraft is the very first Carbon Cub ever built. It was the brainchild of legendary backcountry aircraft entrepreneur Jim Richmond, and it is the very aircraft that created much of what we now know as modern backcountry recreational aviation. Over the years, it set world records in STOL competitions and its performance redefined pilot expectations for what a backcountry aircraft should be capable of.

Ultimately, a whole new class of safer and more capable backcountry aircraft were developed because of what this very aircraft demonstrated was possible. Now, the mission for this aircraft has changed, it is being used to help financially support expanded public backcountry aviation access through the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation by means of this Raffle.

Keeping its original look, the aircraft has been updated by the experts at CubCrafters with new wings, a new fuel system, and other updates. It will be updated with a fresh annual inspection prior to being awarded. The winner of this aircraft will own an amazingly capable STOL aircraft with a very rich backcountry aviation history!

The airplane is valued at $161,071.11 and (if won) must be formally accepted in writing by July 1, 2025. Documentation to be provided with the airplane includes the FAA Certificate of Airworthiness, all logbooks, FAA bill of sale, and applicable IRS forms. In the event of damage or loss of the grand prize aircraft (due to accident, theft, fire, act of god, etc.), JRBAF reserves the right to substitute different aircraft of similar make, model, and value.

6. JRBAF reserves the right to add other prizes during the course of the Raffle. A full list of prizes will be posted on our website at jrbaf.org and updated as new prizes are added.

7. The Raffle winner(s) will be notified by phone and/or by email and/or mail, and all participants will be notified of the winners on our website: jrbaf.org. A winner will be disqualified if the winner cannot be reached after a reasonable effort has been extended, is determined to be ineligible, or cannot or does not comply with our Official Rules. JRBAF will have made a reasonable effort to reach a winner if it has made at least two attempts to contact the winner via phone or by the email address provided when purchasing his/her ticket and/or within four weeks of the official drawing. If a winner cannot be located, is disqualified, or declines acceptance of the prize, the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation will redraw to identify another winner for that prize. All winners agree and consent to the disclosure of their identity and the use of photographs or images of them with their prizes for promotional use.

8. JRBAF, as part of the grand prize, will pay Federal withholding taxes on behalf of the winner in the amount of 33.33% of the fair market value of the grand prize as per IRS Notice 1340. Based on the fair market value of the aircraft ($161,071), minus the ticket cost ($50.00), plus the taxes paid on behalf of the winner ($53,685), the grossed-up amount of the grand prize is $214,756.

The grand prize winner is solely responsible for any state or local taxes, as well as registration, insurance, and other expenses incurred with claiming the prize. In order to award the grand prize, the winner must complete all documents including FAA Aircraft Registration Application, IRS Form W-9 Request for Taxpayer Identified Number and Certification, IRS Form 5754, if applicable, Affidavit and Release, and any other documents required to take possession of the prize.

All Raffle prize winners will receive IRS Form W-2G from the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation for the calendar year the prize was awarded, and for the total value of their prize as determined by the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation. The IRS requires withholding for non-cash prizes with a value exceeding $5,000 after deducting the cost of the winner’s ticket. Other than for the grand prize, the winner of any non-cash prize with a value exceeding $5,000 must pay the withholding tax to the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation at the rate of 25% of the prize value to take possession of the prize.

8. All prizes awarded must be claimed and accepted in Idaho, however, winners do not need to be physically present to claim or accept prizes. Once a prize is accepted, including completion of all required documentation, JRBAF may, at its sole discretion, assist in arranging for the transport of the prize, to the winner’s location. If a winner chooses to forfeit his/her prize, he/she must do so before taking possession of the prize.
